Finding Users Guides and Manuals, Etc. Online

Virtually all major manufacturers of electronics equipment, automotive vehicles, home and office appliances and other hardware now make documentation for their products available online.

This is good to know especially because many of us have had the experience of misplacing the documents that come with products we buy. Also, nowadays many companies provide only minimal (if any) useful print material with their products and expect the buyer to go online to get full instructions or documentation related to equipment purchases.

You'll generally find these place on a name manufacturer's website in the "Support" area. Navigation varies by website, but most major manufacturers provide a search or category interface to identify your product and then find the support documents. Often these are placed on the same page or in the same section as drivers or other software for the product line.

Most user manuals are published in PDF format, which is best viewed and printed by using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software associated with PDF format. Some computers are set by default to user browser software for PDFs, but Reader works best.

It's important to be cautious in downloading product documentation - specifically, it's best by far to download it from the manufacturer's website. Large numbers of websites offering such downloads are non associated with the product manufacturer, and many of these websites are "bait" site which try to trick the visitor into downloading and installing software not needed or even related to getting the guides or manuals you seek.

If you're hesitant to search and download such materials yourself, calling somebody to guide you in the process can be helpful. If you have a home inventory of equipment in your household, making a list and spending a few hours finding and retrieving documentation can be a fruitful project.

PDF files can be printed out easily, particularly using Reader. If print is too small, some PDF files can be altered using other programs to raise font size, depending on the author's settings. Most are easy to read fro the computer screen, though. It just depends on your work style whether to print them or to display them on-screen. Old "legacy" equipment documents may be available as image files rather than character-based files. However, most product documents today are being published as text-searchable files.

Fees for coaching or assistance in document search and retrieval follow a flat rate schedule of $40 per hour, prorated.
