Most computers and mobile devices today are engineered and equipped with software or service access to convert voice messages or audio files to text in the language of the speaker. Device users who utilize "personal assistant" technologies such as Cortana, Siri, Google already are somewhat familiar with the power and reasonable accuracy of speech recognition. Text generation from active speaking or audio recording files sometimes is part of the active software package, or alternately available as an add-on service. Software and subscription services also are available to perform voice-to-text conversions separately from personal assistant features. Voice-to-text conversion can be very useful for persons who find speaking or dictating easier than written composition. Most software and services of this type are powered by technology such as that developed by Nuance, the publisher of Dragon: Naturally Speaking software, which has been available commercially for over a decade. This technology has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years, not only in terms of accuracy but also in terms of processing speed. Learning to use a conversion software is far easier nowadays than in the past as a result of these advances. So dictating letters, notes to yourself, recollections by speaking into your device microphone now is an easy alternative to typing from a keyboard. Just like OCR, voice-to-text conversion is not perfect. After converting audio to text, it still is adviseable if not necessary to edit the text output. Even so, it's a very useful and handy way to compose communications and documents for anybody who finds verbal expression easier than written composition - and a great solution to "writer's block".
