What to Do When a Scam Popup Freezes Your Browser

How to Force Your Browser to Close if It's Frozen by a Scam Message: Everybody has had or will have this experience - a popup freezes your browser and you can't do anything. Sometimes a scary sound effect or threatening voice spews a message saying your computer is infected, or saying you're in trouble.

What to do?

Here's a reminder how to get rid of those scary popups that appear now and then.

1 - Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys on your keyboard and simultaneously tap the Delete key.

2 - Wait for a few moments for the screen to go dark and then for a color display to appear with 4 or 5 options in the center.

3 - Click on the option that says "Task Manager".

4 - That will bring up a window in the upper left of your screen listing programs or processes that are running, including the name of your browser (or the name of the webpage that is open in your browser). Click on the browser name to highlight it.

5 - Click "End Task" in the lower right of the window.

6 - Usually that will close your browser and any of the threatening popups or sound effects that were freezing it up.

7 - You can now trying opening up the browser again.

7-a - If a small window pops up offering to restore the previous session or reload the previous pages, click "No" if you see a "No" option, or simply click on the X in the upper right for the offer to go away. Then close the browser using the X in the upper right of your screen.

7-b - However, if you open up the browser and the popup freeze or sound effects return, then repeat steps 1-6. Following this, try clicking to open a direct web links such as in "Favorites" if you are able to located your Favorites folder and/or if the problem browser is your default browser.
