Computer Tips - Most popular laptop computer brands

One of the most frequent questions that I get regarding computer purchases is "what kind to get" - meaning "what brand".

I don't have a strong opinion about one maker over another. My main computer at home is a Lenovo tower and the laptops I've used have come from multiple makers. Typically I'll go for the best price I can get on the fastest chip and the most memory and expandability.

I tend to buy refurbished machines through a local shop rather than new machines, but have bought two new computers locally when I needed a major upgrade. I've bought all my own computers through Abba Computers over near the BP station where I and most of you receiving this message live.

Most of my acquaintances in the neighborhood who buy through a retail chain have gone through BestBuy, but occasionally Staples or Office Depot. Those who have bought from Walmart report good deals but I have noticed a significant number of problems creep up on computers from there. They're a good source for printers, but computers not so much in my opinion.

You'll find great deals in the $400 or less range on computers at Abba. They carry and build new computers and also carry a good range of refurbished one. I've bought new computers from them in the $1000 up ranges, and I've bought several refurbished averaging about $350, both towers and laptops.

If you're going for a new machine at a chain store, keep an eye for markdowns to get the best buy. Also, be wary of the service deals. Big retail chains are always trying to sell you on extended coverage packages.

When to buy? I suggest "before the old one crashes." Regardless of the season, there always are deals to be found. If you find the performance of an older computer getting to be less than it should be, planning your next purchase in advance can help you avoid a computer failure and loss of files. Transferring your files, data, photos, email access info from one computer to another usually is a very straightforward task, and it's a good occasion to start making regular backups too.
