Scanning pictures and documents from your printer onto your computer usually is less complicated than it may seem at first. Much of the confusion for computer users trying to scan is because the steps vary from one printer to another, and from one scanning software to another. Most printers sold for home use today are multi-function or all-in-one units, which usually means they can print, copy, scan or fax. Most such printers and their associated software also allow a user to scan either by directing the process from software on the computer or from the printer screen. Which method you end up using typically just depends on which you find the easiest for you. Most of the scanning support we provide comes in the form of coaching or tutoring the user and requires only a bit of time and patience. Learning to scan, writing down the steps, and practicing a bit usually doesn't require more than an hour of coaching. Even for experienced computer users, certain scan jobs can be handled more efficiently by hiring them out than doing them at home, such as scanning large numbers of pages. Most home printers either don't have a document feed, or have one which handles only small numbers of pages well. Scanning in a large document or large number of pictures also can be time consuming if you're not in practice doing it, or if home conditions are prone to interruption. Most scanning is done to create an image file and save it on a storage medium. Another form of scanning involves OCR, "optical character recognition".
